Goldline International and Gold Reviews
Gold.
Soft and yellow and shiny. Heavy and malleable and ductile.
Precious.
You can beat one gram of it into a sheet three feet square; an ounce into 300 square feet. Thin enough to for light to shine through. This transmitted light appears greenish blue, because gold strongly reflects yellow and red.
One 2006 estimate has it that all the gold ever mined totals 158,000 ton. If this were all made into a cube, its edges would be about 60 feet. 75% of all gold ever produced has been mined since the early 20th century, yet it has set the standard for wealth and beauty since prehistoric times.
The finest jewelry is made of gold. Gold can be colored by the addition of other metals in alloy: copper for red; silver for green; platinum, palladium, or nickel for white.
Since pure gold is too soft for ordinary use, alloying with copper or other base metals typically hardens it. The gold content of gold alloys is indicated in carats (k), pure gold being designated as 24k. From 1526 into the 1930s, gold coins intended for actual circulation were usually a 22k alloy called crown gold, for durability in day-to-day handling. Contemporary collector/investment bullion coins, not requiring good mechanical wear properties, are typically 24k, although the American Gold Eagle, the British gold sovereign and the South African Krugerrand continue to be made at 22k by tradition. The special issue Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin contains the highest purity gold of any bullion coin, at 99.999% (.99999 fine). The popular issue Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin has a purity of 99.99%. Several other 99.99% pure gold coins are currently available. In 2006, the U.S. Mint began production of the American Buffalo gold bullion coin also at 99.99% purity.
There is an age-old tradition of biting gold in order to test its authenticity. Although this is certainly not a professional way of examining gold, the bite test should score the gold because gold is a soft metal; the purer the gold, the easier it should be to mark it.
